Colbert Urges Us to Send Our Medical Bills to Max Baucus

The Colbert ReportMon - Thurs 11:30pm / 10:30c
Send Your Medical Bills to Max Baucus
www.colbertnation.com
Colbert Report Full EpisodesPolitical HumorMichael Moore

Stephen Colbert gave his viewers a great idea to show our outrage over the public option failing to pass.

Send Max Baucus your healthcare bill. All of them. Believe me, believe me, folks, he's good for it. In the last five years, Baucus has gotten $3.2 million from the healthcare industry. So, Nation, if you've been denied coverage by a health insurance company, just send your unpaid medical bills to: Max Baucus' Huge Pile of Money, Washington, D.C. Not sure if you qualify? Just call his office and ask to speak to the eligibility agent. I believe his name is . . . Max.

His D.C. real address is:
511 Hart Senate Office Building
Washington, D.C. 20510.

Maybe he'll read your bills. I doubt they'll be 1,000 pages.

Anti-Feminist Dating Service: Senator Jon Kyl

This is Jon Kyl. He's a Republican Senator from the great state of Arizona, so you know he has a stable well-paying government job. Very hot. And he's a real man's man. When debating health care reform, he makes sure no one thinks he's a lady:

I don't need maternity care.

See, he's not like those pussy guys who need maternity care. He's a real man. A real honest man:

So requiring that on my insurance policy is something that I don't need and will make the policy more expensive.

*swoon* What a bad boy! If you want to find out if he's as selfish a lover as he is a human being, give him a call. I'm sure he'd love to hear from you.

B-b-but What About the Billionaires???

If you've been on the same planet as I've been on the past few days (i.e., Planet Why Did I Choose to go to Grad School AGAIN?!), you haven't seen this new video from Will Ferrell and friends imploring us to think about the health insurance companies for once. 'Tis funny.

So Not Funny, Russell Brand!

The big story about MTV's Video Music Awards Sunday night was the Kanye West/Taylor Swift affair. The event that isn't getting much play is Russel Brand's rape joke that he made against Megan Fox:

“She has admitted she is a little bit cuckoo upstairs and I have trained in psychiatry. So Megan, if you do have a little dizzy spell love, I could probably drop you a little pill. You can go and have a lie down in my dressing room. You might get some crazy dreams about being visited by a scarecrow, a perfumed weirdo leaning over you. But let me tell you, that’s a common side-effect. Megan, take your medicine.”

Rape isn't funny, and joking about it is even less funny. And if that's not bad enough, he made a joke about the rumors regarding Lady Gaga's sex. I couldn't find a direct quote of what he said first, but here's my rough summary of it. He said that the rumors about Lady Gaga's sex were sexist; people thought that because of her comfort with her strong sexual expression, she must really be a guy. Good on you, Russell Brand, for calling it how it is. Oh, wait, this is still Russell Brand we're talking about, so he had to say something disgusting.

“And if I pull her leotard to one side and find something a little extra there, I will just make it stiff and hang my hat on it.”

Ugh. Either put the rumors to bed, or don't discuss them at all. Don't send mixed messages about them. What does he expect the audience to think now? Even though Brand correctly stated that the rumors were sexist, he reignited them by saying they might be true. That damages Lady Gaga and the entire intersex population (and the thought to be intersex population).

Joking about rape and delicate sexuality issues -- so not funny, Russell Brand.

I have to do this assignment for one of my teaching courses where I have to visit a school for a few hours, observe a class, and get some general information about the school and surrounding community. Every school I call requires that I give up my first-born child in order to do this assignment, since they don't want just anyone entering their school. When I told them I don't have any children and don't plan to, they told me a pint of my blood would be a sufficient offering. So I'll be visiting the blood bank soon. Anyway . . . .

More from the Anonymous Misogynist

It's been more than a year since I left my old blog and started this one. For some reason, people still comment on the old blog from time to time. Some of the comments come from assholes who always post under "Anonymous," so I'm calling this sorry excuse for a person the Anonymous Misogynist. They're probably different people, but they all come from the same breed of women-hating dirtbags. And I recently got two comments in moderation two days in a row, so this time, I think the comments did come from the same Anonymous Misogynist. They're just too stupid to realize that comments go through moderation and aren't even posted anymore (not even the nice ones), because I don't update that blog anymore in any way. One comment was from a post dated March 10, 2008 where I wrote about a gym at Harvard that has women-only hours to accommodate Muslim women and any other women that feel uncomfortable exercising in front of men. I commented on the backlash the Muslim women were receiving from political pundits and the university community. Anonymous Misogynist said,

You're just a man hating sexist and all of your arguments boil down to that.

Yes, I am a man (shock horror) and no, I don't letch at women nor do I feel I have the privilege to do so and I don't want it either. (I bet now your next conclusion is that I'm gay - wrong again).

In the UK there are entirely female only gyms and I'm forbidden to enter because of my gender. There is no other reason.

There is no way you can argue that that is not sexist. Its ridiculous that you're even trying.

Rich of the person who's commenting anonymously to a post from a year and a half ago to call me ridiculous, and rich of the person who's telling me what I believe to simultaneously deride me for supposedly making assumptions about his gender and sexuality, which I never did, and before even reading the comment. And this is after I said, "A Harvard student suggested that another gym on campus have male-only hours at the same time as the female-only hours, and that's a policy I support," and "Usually, I don't support separating the men from the women," and after a slew of other civil comments I made without insult to two people, at least one who I know is male (because he's a friend of the woman I used to blog with). But apparently, according to the paranoid and privileged "Anonymous Misogynist" ** that's all code for "I hate men!" [froths at mouth]

The next forever-to-be-unmoderated comment from Anonymous Misogynist was about a genderqueer boy named Larry King, who was murdered for flirting with another boy after that boy made fun of his gender identity. I wrote that post on March 28, 2008, and the trial starts late next month. Here's what Anonymous Misogynist said:

that faggot deserves it! and you are a piece of shit feminist.

I guess Larry King was a bigger faggot than I am a piece of shit feminist, considering Anonymous Misogynist didn't end that last statement with an exclamation point. What a fuckface, right?

I don't know if Anonymous Misogynist takes Sundays off, but I'm definitely looking forward to its next comment.

*Reminds me of a recent episode of The Simpsons that was just on, in which Marge opens a gym for women. Homer asks, "Why would women want to go to a gym if there were no men there watching them and judging them?" After seeing the long line of women waiting to enter the gym at its grand opening, Homer exclaims, "We're gonna be rich!"

**I'm totally thinking of drawing a cartoon character of that.

So Not Funny, Representative Jenkins!

Representative Lynn "Great White Hope" Jenkins (R-Kansas) laughed at a single mother at a town hall meeting about healthcare a few weeks ago. Here's how the conversation went:

Constituent: I’m a 27 year-old single mother. I work full-time. I do not have health insurance. My employer does not provide health insurance to me and I cannot afford it privately. So my question is, why shouldn’t my government guarantee all of its citizens health care?

Rep. Jenkins: Thank you. I’m sorry, maybe you missed my opening remarks, but absolutely. That’s why we have Medicaid in the current system and that’s why under the alternative proposal we have an option for low-to-modest-income people to be able to afford health care and then we’ve got the SCHIP program for children. So I think we’ve got all of the bases covered.

No, we don't. If this constituent and her child were eligible for Medicaid and SCHIP, they'd be on it. How patronizing of Representative Jenkins to dismiss this woman's concerns for her and her family's healthcare access. This is a reality for millions of Americans. Audience members informed Representative Jenkins that not everyone is covered under these programs, and the conversation continued.

Representative Jenkins: OK, if you’re not then you’re the perfect example for why we've got to have reform and why we've got to do it now but we have to do it right and if we can do an alternative proposal, as I’m suggesting, give you the money to go buy it in a reformed marketplace where it is affordable, that’s my preference rather than to saddle the nation with yet another government program when they can’t afford the government run programs we have.

Constituent: I want an option that I can pay for. I work. I pay my bills. I’m not a burden on the state. I pay my taxes. So why can’t I get an affordable option. Why are you against that?

Representative Jenkins: A government run program (laugh) is going to subsidize not only yours but (laughs) everyone's in this room. So I’m not sure what we’re talking about here.

But Representative Jenkins knows exactly what this constituent is talking about. As a member of Congress, she already gets healthcare that is subsidized by the American people! That's what we're all talking about, you idiot. Later, Representative Jenkins calls getting a government handout of thousands of dollars a year to buy health insurance in the private market "being a grown up." Did she not listen to this constituent at all? She isn't a "burden on the state," and she doesn't want to be. She wants to be a self-sufficient grown up and have affordable and reliable health insurance for her and her family. Put on your listening ears, stop laughing at hard-working women, and stop claiming ignorance, Representative Jenkins. It's so not funny!

You Can Go Girl . . . .

Or you can sit on the damn seat!

Senator Ted Kennedy died of brain cancer yesterday at the age of 77. That's Gay: Lady Kisses

Bryan Safi's latest That's Gay explores the "lez pretending" in prime time sitcoms and dramas.

So Not Funny, Conan O'Brien

The image above comes from an episode of The Tonight Show with Conan O'Brien that aired last week. I was very offended by it, but didn't get a chance to write about it. Luckily, Renee at Womanist Musings did and found the offensive picture.

Basically, Conan O'Brien has this running gag called "Conan's Tabloid Moment" where he decides to stage a scandalous scene, take a picture of it, and sell it to the tabloids. At first, he pretends he's at a strip club. Then, he decides that the situation would be worse if he's drunk. What could possibly make that scene any worse? If the strippers were "trannies" of course! Because viewing cis women as sex objects isn't sickening, but if they're trans women . . . . And the way the cis women strippers become trans is by slapping a Keith Hernandez mustache on their faces. It's not that simple, Conan, and it's so not funny.

Conan has played around with gender on his show. A running joke of his is the fact that he looks a lot like Oscar-winning actress Tilda Swinton. A few years back, Conan enjoyed fame in Finland, and he attributed it to his resemblance to their president, Tarja Halonen. With both jokes, Conan made sure the joke was on him. He wasn't saying that Swinton and President Halonen looked like men, but that his red hair, pale complexion, and thin physique made him look like those women. He seems to be quite comfortable with his appearance, at least enough to talk about it and make fun of himself. But not everyone is as comfortable with the body they were born into. Trans people aren't afforded the privilege to feel comfortable in their own skin and be accepted as they are. That oppression shouldn't be exploited for cheap laughs.

The Irony is Completely Lost on Sarah Palin

Sarah Palin* said this in one of her Facebook notes the other day,

The America I know and love is not one in which my parents or my baby with Down Syndrome will have to stand in front of Obama’s “death panel” so his bureaucrats can decide, based on a subjective judgment of their “level of productivity in society,” whether they are worthy of health care. Such a system is downright evil.

after saying this,

"So how about, in honor of the American solider, you quit making things up?"

and this

Face it. You're one of us now! One of us! One of us! One of us! (and it goes on).

*This might make me sound like a total asshole, but I don't really care. I'm REALLY glad that I don't have to put "Governor" in front of her name anymore. It actually bothered me to show such an evil person that kind of respect. Top 6 Ways to Deflect Accusations of Racism

Part of the reason why I haven't been updating is because I'm pretty addicted to this Facebook game called Typing Maniac. You have to type words that fall from the top of the screen before they reach the bottom. It's much more fun than I'm making it sound. There are a bunch of words, some from different languages, some with double meanings. Facebook users can discuss the game on the message board, and someone posted a topic called "Racist words." He says,

Why on earth is the word CHINK on it???? What kind of BS is this?

"Chink" has more than one meaning, and a few people informed the OP of this. Still, there's no denying that the word is triggering, since it is also a racist term used to refer to Chinese people. And then comes the deluge of "it's not racist because I say so" replies. These comments come in many forms.

First, there's the "You're racist because you notice racism" response:

What kind of racist initially thinks of that as a racist word when it has existed as a benign word for much longer?

Uh, the kind of racist who's been called a chink before? What a bitch, and I mean that in the most benign way possible.

Then there's the "playing dumb" response:

chinks?

1 : a small cleft, slit, or fissure
2 : a weak spot that may leave one vulnerable 3 : a narrow beam of light shining through a chink

I don't see it as a racist word and I'm chinese

Except you know it can be used as a racist term against Chinese people. Why else mention at the end that you're Chinese? Which segues nicely into the next response, the "I'm not offended, so it's not offensive" response:

I'm not offended by it at all.

Where's the "Have a Cookie" application when you need it? I love this one, because it basically tells others how they should feel, like they're the normal standard and everyone else deviates from it. I bet if I kicked this kid in the balls, he'd scream in pain. And I'd tell him, "If it hurts as much as you say it does, wouldn't it hurt me too?"

Then there's the "words mean nothing" response . . . :

I think if someone is offended by words, he can stay at home, close his pc his tv and his ears. Black people get offended when you say the word negroes but they say it all the time, homosexual people are offended if you say fug but they always say it. Life is like a south park joke for them.

. . . Made by someone who hates the fact that he can't use racial slurs because he's an oppressed White man. Now where did I put that tiny violin . . . . Oh, well. Let's get on with it. Probably my favorite response to a racist accusation is the "Speaking of racism, let's not speak about that" response:

lets just start posting all the weird words you get here~

Here's a word for you: FAIL.

And finally, there's the "You're a victim of racism, so there's something wrong with you emotionally" response:

Secure people don't make a fuss about words. I'm sick of hearing about it all from INSECURE people who've been taught insecurity in their childhood. GROW UP!

Yes, why can't we all be secure in our Whiteness like you? Oh, that's right. Because we're not all White. It's all part of our pathology.

Latisse: For Women with Eyelash FAIL

When is having "inadequate or not enough eyelashes" a medical condition that should be treated with prescription drugs? When it's labeled hypotrichosis, a condition in which hair does not grow at all in places where it's supposed to. Eyelashes function as little brooms for our eyeballs that sweep away dust and dead skin cells. They also grant wishes*. That's why people with hypotrichosis need Latisse, a prescription liquid that people with this terrible affliction dab on their eyelids to make eyelashes grow where there were no eyelashes before.

Cue Brooke Shields. I bet you didn't even know that Brooke Shields never had eyelashes until about 16 weeks before the above commercial was filmed. That's because she uses Latisse, and also because she's always had eyelashes.

Now, there are diseases that cause people to not grow, (hypotrichosis), lose (alopecia), and pull out (trichotillomania) their hair, including their eyelashes. Hair loss is also a side effect of chemotherapy. This product could probably help people in those situations. But Latisse is not marketed that way. It's advertised as a cosmetic drug for women who are, apparently, supposed to feel insecure about their eyelashes. The company uses the term "hypotrichosis" and defines it so narrowly to only pertain to eyelashes that aren't long and thick enough (whatever that means), making eyelashes that don't conform to our society's beauty standards a disease. On top of all the other parts of our bodies we're supposed to hate (i.e., all of it), now we have to make a doctor's appointment to check the adequacy of our eyelashes. What the hell?

* Seriously, the company is donating $1 million to the Make a Wish Foundation.

File this under WTF too. Rush Limbaugh claims there's some sort of significance to the fact that Michael Jackson died during Barack Obama's presidency. Important Question, Whatever You Are!

Retro Comedy posted the 15 Creepiest Vintage Ads of All Time, and this gem of an ad for postage meters came in 4th (Really? Only 4th?). It asks the important question, "Is it always illegal to kill a woman?" Apparently, it isn't if your bitchy holier-than-thou secretary refuses to use a postage meter as fine as this one.

Speaking of which, what the hell is a postage meter? I mean besides the perfect murder weapon?

Every Day is Opposite Day in the GOP

As we should all know by now, South Carolina governor Mark Sanford has been cheating on his wife. This is the same Mark Sanford who called for President Clinton's resignation after lying about his affair with Monica Lewinsky (as did John Ensign, another philandering Republican leader). And this isn't the first time Republican leaders have engaged in behavior that they publicly denounce. There was Rep. Mark Foley, who created the Internet SAFETY Act before sending lewd instant messages to underage congressional pages, and homobigot Sen. Larry Craig, who turned out to at least like guys at least a little.

Then there's Oklahoma State Representative Sally Kern (R), who is CRAZY. She gained Internet super-stardom after someone posted an anti-gay (and anti-Islam) rant of hers on YouTube last year. Now, she has this creepy "proclamation for morality." And by "morality," I mean "creating a state-sponsored religion."

WHEREAS, this nation has become a world leader in promoting abortion,
pornography, same sex marriage, sex trafficking, divorce, illegitimate births, child abuse, and
many other forms of debauchery; and

WHEREAS, alarmed that the Government of the United States of America is forsaking
the rich Christian heritage upon which this nation was built; and

WHEREAS, grieved that the Office of the president of these United States has refused
to uphold the long held tradition of past presidents in giving recognition to our National Day of Prayer; and

WHEREAS, deeply disturbed that the Office of the president of these United States
disregards the biblical admonitions to live clean and pure lives by proclaiming an entire month to an immoral behavior;

NOW THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that we the undersigned elected officials
of the people of Oklahoma, religious leaders and citizens of the State of Oklahoma, appealing to the Supreme Judge of the world, solemnly declare that the HOPE of the great State of Oklahoma and of these United States, rests upon the Principles of Religion and Morality as put forth in the HOLY BIBLE . . . .

Now this would scare me, if it wasn't Opposite Day every day in the GOP. Sooner or later, some scandal will come out about her. But what will it be?

That's what the new Funny Poll will hopefully predict.

The above photo was taken at a conference hosted by brownphobic Pat Buchanan. If you can't tell from that fabulous banner, the conference was to promote English-only initiatives. But how do you pronounce that? "con-fer-en-ay-say?" I don't know what language that is, but it ain't English.

Not So Mini Rant: My Adventures in Adopting, and Surrendering, a Puppy

After our home got broken into, my family decided to get a younger dog to protect our home from invaders. We thought it would be a good idea to adopt a dog from a shelter or rescue, since it would be less expensive and more helpful than getting a purebred dog. So we searched for possible dogs on Petfinder. We found a possible match within a week of the burglary.

We were told to go to a pet salon to meet the two dogs we were interested in at 9:30 am on a Saturday. As we walked up to the pet salon, I immediately recognized on of the dogs, Haley, that we saw on Petfinder. She was very cute and gave us lots of kisses. The other dog we wanted to meet wasn't there yet. We spent over two hours with Haley while we were waiting for the other dog to arrive. We really liked Haley and thought the other dog would have to be pretty special for us to choose her over Haley. Finally, the other dog arrived. She looked much older than what the Petfinder description stated. She was a nice dog, but she wasn't like Haley. We discussed our decision outside the pet salon and decided to take Haley. As we walked back to the pet salon, we saw a family with two young kids playing with Haley. They were told to go to the pet salon to meet Haley at 10:00, but they got there a couple hours later. The children were having a great time petting and playing with Haley. The children's mother said that they were looking at Haley's picture all week on Petfinder and couldn't wait to meet her. This family believed that they were going to the pet salon to adopt Haley, only to meet another family that wanted Haley too. Haley wasn't promised to either family, but we couldn't bring ourselves to break these kids' hearts by taking away a dog they fell in love with before they even met her. So we told the children's mother that they could take Haley and we would continue to look for our dog. She thanked us with tears in her eyes. We left the pet salon without a dog. As we drove away, we saw the kids outside with Haley jumping up and down happily. We knew we made the right decision and figured we would adopt a dog soon.

Sure enough, we found a dog on Petfinder that we were very interested in. She was an Australian Shepherd/German Shepherd mix named Demi. She was very cute, and she was a great mixture of intelligent and protective breeds. We contacted the rescue and were told to go to a pet store to meet her. I went to the pet store by myself to meet Demi and see if she was the right dog for our family. Demi was not there. I waited for the woman who ran the animal rescue to ask her if Demi was going to be there. When it finally became my turn to talk to her, she walked away. I asked another worker for the rescue, and she said that Demi was already adopted. Swing and a miss, strike two. We continued our search.

For the next few weeks, my mother and I searched on Petfinder for a dog. We contacted countless other rescues and shelters. Most of them did not return our e-mails. Finally, we found another dog on Petfinder that we liked named Loretta. The rescue told my mom to call them if she wanted to adopt Loretta. My mother called and left a message. We did not get any response. I e-mailed the head of the rescue and asked if Loretta was already adopted. I got a response, and Loretta had been adopted. Thanks for letting us know.

About two and a half weeks ago, we found some more Australian Shepherd mixes on Petfinder that we were interested in adopting. I contacted the animal rescue, and they put a dog on hold for us. My brother and I went to a pet store to pick her up. Her name was Abigail. She was sweet and beautiful. I held her while we were waiting for her to be examined by the vet and to fill out the adoption forms. We took her home two weeks ago and changed her name to Maizee. She followed me wherever I went. She loved to play fetch outside and lay in the grass. Whenever someone approached her, she rolled over for a belly rub and wagged her tail wildly. After I got home from work on the first Monday we had her, I played with her outside. She ran around our back yard and taunted our other dog by yapping at him and nipping at his heels. As I watered the flowers, Maizee wiggled herself in between the bushes so that she could get her face all wet. With all the running around she did, I was sure she would have a great night's sleep.

But she didn't. Maizee woke up in the middle of the night several times to vomit. She didn't eat breakfast on Tuesday morning. She slept for most of the day. She finally drank some water and played a little bit outside in the late afternoon. She ate some of her food that evening and kept it down. We took her to her scheduled vet appointment the next day. She had a fever, but not a high one. The vet injected some fluids under her skin to bring down the fever and hydrate her. The next day, we found out that she had two types of parasites and that she should be admitted to the animal hospital for an overnight stay. The vet also wanted to test for parvovirus, which is a contagious and potentially fatal virus that attacks the small intestine in puppies and causes vomiting and diarrhea. On Friday morning, we found out that Maizee did indeed have parvovirus. I was devastated. I was afraid that she was going to die.

My mother contacted the rescue by e-mail and left a message on their voice mail. I couldn't even go to work because I was so upset. I spent the day outside of the house and came home to find a message on my answering machine. It was a representative from the rescue asking me how Maizee was doing. She sounded very cheery, as if she didn't know the devastating news that we got that morning. This was several hours after my mother contacted them -- twice. I was too upset to talk about Maizee's health, so I called my mother and asked her to call the rescue. My mother called them and found out that all three of Maizee's litter mates had parvo too. In fact, one of them was treated and released from the rescue's vet. The contract states that the rescue would contact the litter mates' owners if they found out that one of them had a contagious disease or other health problems. They didn't contact us. We contacted them to protect the other puppies, and we weren't even contractually obligated to do so. We just love animals.

Maizee spent four and a half days in the hospital hooked up to IVs. She had a high fever last Saturday that the vet was able to bring down with some fluids and a cool bath. Maizee was discharged from the hospital this past Monday. I was so happy to see her home that I cried. Maizee came home with a hearty appetite, but not her usual playfulness. We figured she was groggy from the medicine.

On Thursday and yesterday, Maizee was particularly sleepy. She did not want to get picked up, and she did not ask for any belly rubs. She squealed whenever someone picked her up to go outside. On Friday, she didn't have breakfast. The vet requested that she be checked out again. Maizee had a high fever. The vet told me that some parvo puppies never get better 100% and to be prepared for that. He said that he would like to admit her in the hospital again and put her on IVs, but a less expensive option would be to inject her with more fluids and give her another medicine for parasites. I decided for the cheaper option, since my mother had already spent thousands of dollars on Maizee's hospital stay and couldn't afford any more large medical bills like that. I called my mother with the news that the vet gave me. She said that she would be calling the rescue to give Maizee back to them so that she can get treatment at their vet. I was too angry to even be upset. When I got home from work last night, Maizee was already on her way back to the rescue.

And I hesitate to call them a rescue. They sold sick puppies to at least four families two weeks ago. What were they rescuing them from? They didn't even make sure that the puppies were healthy before adopting them out. They didn't test them for parvo. A dog rescue organization should know better. Those puppies had parvo before they went to their new homes, since the virus has a hibernation period of one to two weeks. Maizee did not catch any illness from our home. They pick up these dogs from no one knows where and sells them to the first person to wave cash in their faces. They're disgusting and have absolutely no scruples (unless they rescued a dog by that name. Roll over, Scruples!).

All of these rescues that I dealt with operated unethically. One rescue reserved one dog for two families, two adopted out two that were on hold for my family before we even got a chance to meet them, and the last one sold gravely ill puppies to four families (and maybe more).

Maizee might get better while she stays at that rescue's vet. But she won't be our dog again. If she lives, she'll probably be placed on Petfinder again with a description stating that her previous owners didn't realize how expensive a puppy can be and couldn't afford to care for her any longer. She'll be adopted out again to another family who will have no idea how sick she was.

Everybody thinks animal rescues are doing a great thing. After all, they travel the country to rescue animals that would otherwise be euthanized for no good reason so that they can have a second chance at life and be adopted into a loving home. And everybody thinks that they're doing the right thing by adopting a puppy in need instead of buying one from a breeder. I'm writing this to warn anyone who reads this that this is not the case. The best advice I can give is that if you want to adopt, adopt a dog that's at least a year old, one that has all of its vaccinations and has an immune system to fight off other diseases. If you really want a puppy, go to a breeder. Research the breeder and the breed of dog you're interested in. Puppies from breeders spend the first 8 weeks of their lives with their mothers and litter mates and under the scrutiny of their owners. We bought our first dog from a reputable breeder, and he was never as sick in 10 years as Maizee has been in the past two weeks.

I don't know when, how, or if we'll get another dog. It will take us a while to get over the experience we had with immoral rescues and Maizee's sickness. But I do know that we will not make the same mistake again.

Thanks for listening.

So Not Funny, David Letterman

David Letterman made a really gross joke about baseball player Alex Rodriguez and Willow Palin, the teenage daughter of Gov. Sarah Palin, the other night on the Late Show. Momma and Willow went to a Yankee game together the other night, which is already vomit-inducing. Here's the joke:

One awkward moment with Sarah Palin at the Yankee game during the seventh inning, her daughter was knocked up by Alex Rodriguez.

Ew. Ew. The joke doesn't even really make much sense. This joke should be directed towards A-Rod and his brief fling with 50-year-old Madonna. So if the joke was about A-Rod and Sarah Palin hooking up, that might have been funny. But that's not how it went down. The joke implies that Alex Rodriguez, who's 33, impregnated a 14-year-old. That's just nasty.

New Jerseyites Are Funny

New Jersey is a pretty funny place. Janeane Garofalo, Jon Stewart, Bill Maher, Abott and Costello, and I are all originally from the Garden State. As I'm researching candidates running in the gubernatorial primary, I have to add one more funny person to that list: Democrat Jeff Boss. In his list of things he's going to do as governor:

GET RID OF TOLLS ON THE PARKWAY AT THE UNION, ESSEX, BERGEN TOLL PLAZAS THE FIRST WEEK I AM IN OFFICE OR I WILL RESIGN . . .

I WILL ALSO BULL DOZE THE UNION, ESSEX, AND BERGEN TOLLS PERSONALLY(WITH THE HELP FROM THE UNIONS AND CONSTRUCTION WORKERS WHO ARE U.S. CITIZENS) WITHIN ONE WEEK OF GETTING INTO OFFICE, OR I WILL RESIGN.

Yes, tolls on the parkway are no laughing matter, especially for me, since I encounter those three toll plazas almost anywhere I go. They're a huge pain in the ass to avoid, unless you like adding a half hour to your ride and driving through the ghetto (both of which I don't mind sometimes). Every person who ever ran for governor in New Jersey has promised to get rid of the tolls. But this guy takes the cake in promising to resign if he personally doesn't eliminate arguably the three busiest toll plazas in the state in his first week. And 95% of his website is in bold caps. Jeff Boss, you are hi-larious. I just might vote for your crazy ass.

Take Action Monday

Send a letter of support to Dr. Tiller's family. Dr. George Tiller was an OB/GYN who provided late-term abortions to women with unhealthy pregnancies, until he was murdered on Sunday morning outside of his church. He was one of the few OB/GYNs in the country who was willing and able to provide this important service to women who would have otherwise died or been seriously injured due to their pregnancies. Dr. Tiller had survived one assassination attempt, a bombing of his clinic, and daily death threats from extremists who would rather see a woman become infertile due to her unhealthy pregnancy, give birth to a dead baby or a baby that will live only a few minutes, or die in childbirth, than to see a man save these women's lives and give them a second chance at motherhood. Dr. Tiller was murdered by one of these extremists in front of his family and in front of his god. My thoughts go out to Dr. Tiller's wife, children, and grandchildren, as well as the many patients of Dr. Tiller, and the women who have to look for a new doctor who is as experienced and compassionate as Dr. Tiller who can provide the legal and life-saving procedures that extremists believe women should have no right to have.

Condemn the racist and sexist attacks against Judge Sonia Sotomayor.

Help reduce the threat of nuclear weapons.

Ask Senators Kerry and Lugar to hold a hearing on Sudan.

Thank UN Peacekeepers for their good work.
